Image: Craig Houk and the Athens Playwrights’ Workshop will present the new play Tracks: A Magical Realist Tragedy by playwriting faculty John Bray for two nights only at the Marigold Auditorium for Arts and Culture in Winterville, Georgia. The production is being directed by Jesse Lowe.Set in the 1990's in the Hudson Valley, New York, Tracks tells the story of a group of teens who fight to keep their hangout spot safe from a new high-speed railway. However, they themselves invite destructive forces in as the opiate addiction crisis becomes up close and personal. The mythic forces of local urban stories and American Folklore stalk the teens, whispering and maneuvering to add to their ranks. Utterly compelling performances by a talented cast will transport you into a unique world of 90's zine culture, urban mythology and American Tall Tales. The play has previously been a Semifinalist for the prestigious O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, as well as a Semifinalist for the Ashland New Play Festival. It has received developmental workshops and readings with About Face Ireland (Dublin/Online), The Skeleton Rep(resents) (Brooklyn, NY); The Langhorne Players (Newtown, PA); The Wallace Theater (Lubbock, Texas); and Playwrights Thriving (online). This play is a co-production between the Athens Playwrights' Workshop and D.C. Based playwright and producer Craig Houk, a friend of Bray's who has previously produced Bray's ten-minute play "Elvis at Pemberley" for the online Two-Handed Slam. "Elvis at Pemberley" would later be selected for The Best Ten-Minute Plays 2022, an annual anthology published by Smith and Kraus. The Athens Playwrights' Workshop is a non-curricular new play incubator founded by Bray with then UGA PhD in Theatre and Performance Studies student George Pate in 2011. The APW meets on alternating Mondays throughout the academic year. Local director, DJ, and stand-up comedian Jesse A. Lowe is directing Tracks. Lowe has previously run new play incubators in North Carolina and Washington State. Of the play, Lowe says, “The work dances between the tangible world and the unseen world, the sacred and the profane. One part fringe theatre, one-part modern dance, one-part Chautauqua performance, and one-part classical tragedy, this magical realist play is a tour de force of longing and loss.”The cast features talents from the UGA student community, as well as Athens-area performance artists.Note: The play is strongly recommended for audiences over 16.Performance Schedule:Friday, April 25 at 7:30PMSaturday, April 26 at 7:30PMThe Marigold Auditorium373 N.
