About this Degree Theatre is a creative art in which true excellence can only be achieved through total mastery of the mind, body and technical craft. The Theatre Arts curricula combine rigorous studio class work with a demanding production schedule to provide students with in depth training and practice in theatre. Undergraduate training options include acting, scenic, costume and lighting design, theatre and costume technology, and production and management training. First year students learn a foundation in theatre and its history, expository writing, art history and receive a specially designed theatre course relating to the student's area of interest. Students begin intensive theatre study as sophomores. The continued development of the visual media is expanding the volume of opportunities for majors in theatre. Networking, job experience, internships and expertise in your specialty are paramount to success. What you will learn All undergraduate theatre majors at the University of Georgia must complete a core of theatre courses designed to introduce the various facets of the field of theatre. They include courses in acting, design, play analysis and theatre history. In addition two courses at one semester hour each are "Applied Drama" courses (THEA 2040 and 2050) involving the student in the actual work of theatre in such areas as costuming, stagecraft, and box office and promotion. In planning their schedules, students should note that Acting I (THEA 3500) is a prerequisite for most upper division acting courses (which are major electives), and Design Foundatations (THEA 3300) is a prerequisite for most upper division design courses (also electives); Theatre History I (THEA 4200) is typically offered only in the Fall semester, and Theatre History II (THEA 4210) in the Spring; and the Senior Seminar (THEA 5053) must be taken in the Fall semester of the senior year. Interesting Facts about this Degree or Program Roughly 50% or more of our theatre majors pursue second majors or dual degrees, which is encouraged and usually manageable within four years. Graduates with degrees in Theatre frequently work in or go on to graduate programs in a wide range of fields, including theatre and film (acting, film production, stage management, directing, arts administration, design, playwriting, dramaturgy) as well as business, law, telecommunications, and other people-related disciplines.
