About the Shows Sweat by Lynn Nottage (Pulitzer Prize for Drama 2017, Obie Award, Tony Award-nominated). The play is set in a blue collar neighborhood bar frequented by a group of friends who work at the steel mill in poverty-stricken Reading, PA. The play moves between 2000 and 2008 and explores the growing tensions between the friends when the changing economy, union politics, and layoffs create mistrust and fear. Issues of race, immigration, and fear of the deterioration of middle class life tear at long-time friendships in a new economy. 9 roles— range of character ages. The Wolves - During their pregame warmups, a girls’ soccer team contends with life’s big (and small) questions - with topics ranging from international social conflicts to sex to their coach’s obvious hangovers. These aspiring athletes navigate the realities of their changing worlds - and the world at large - all while awaiting the rapidly-approaching uncertainty of a post-high school future. Sarah DeLappe’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated play is a fast-paced slice of reality that is equal parts funny and enigmatic, offering a beautifully nuanced portrait of nine girls attempting to make sense of an overwhelming world. 10 roles— young women. This play includes soccer drills and the physical action of prepping for and playing soccer. A Little Night Music by Sondheim creates a stunning tour de force when he takes Ingmar Bergman's comedy of manners, Smiles of a Summer Night, and turns it into a musical where confusion rules, jealousies flair and sexual passions reign. Winner of four Tony Awards, A Little Night Music explores the tangled web of affairs centered around actress, Desirée Armfeldt, and the men who love her: a lawyer by the name of Fredrik Egerman and the Count Carl-Magnus Malcom. When the traveling actress performs in Fredrik's town, the estranged lovers' passion rekindles. This strikes a flurry of jealousy and suspicion between Desirée; Fredrik; Fredrick's wife, Anne; Desirée's current lover, the Count; and the Count's wife, Charlotte. Both men – as well as their jealous wives – agree to join Desirée and her family for a weekend in the country at Desirée's mother's estate. With everyone in one place, infinite possibilities of new romances and second chances bring endless surprises. This dramatic musical is a celebration of love full of hilariously witty and heartbreakingly moving moments of adoration, regret and desire. Please note: This production involves both kissing and some simulated sexual activities with no nudity. Some of the roles could appear on stage in period undergarments in different states of undress. An intimacy director will be employed by the department in the staging of these scenes. All roles are open except for the role of Desire and Henrik. We are seeking actors and understudies to play 18 roles. For a detailed breakdown of characters, click here: A Little Night Music Character Breakdown Tags: auditions
