Explaining PODs and individualized courses

Confused about how permission of department works? Individualized courses?

Think of the class as a house, and the professor as the homeowner.
Steven is the builder/contractor.
Dina is the locksmith.

Sometimes it’s an open house, sometimes it’s invitation-only.

You want to come to the house? It’s up to the homeowner (professor).

Does space need to be made for you? It’s up to the homeowner to ask the contractor (Steven) to make that happen.

Do you need a key to get in? The homeowner has to ask the locksmith (Dina).

Neither the contractor or locksmith is going to make rooms or keys because someone who doesn’t own the house asks them to.

If the house is supposed to be open and the door is stuck, you can ask the locksmith. If you have a key and it’s not working, you can ask the locksmith.

Otherwise: ask the homeowner.

To get into the house: we need one email from the homeowner (info provided to the homeowner by the houseguest) with the following information:

  • Do you just need to get in to an existing house? For POD/Other Overrides: Send to the locksmith (Dina):
    • The house’s address: The prefix/# of the class (ex: THEA 7999) and the CRN#.
    • Who wants in? I need their 81#
  • Do you need the contractor to build the house? Steven will need:
    • The house’s address: The prefix/# of the class (ex: THEA 8999). If it’s a preexisting class that has a CRN# and needs more seats added, include that.
    • Who is the room being created for? Steven needs their 81#
