CONTENT AWARENESS For actors considering auditioning for Evil Dead: The Musical, please be aware that this is an over-the-top horror-comedy that intentionally parodies and exaggerates typical horror movie stereotypes and tropes. The production features extensive choreographed violence and exaggerated gore, including dismemberment and copious amounts of fake blood, which may reach designated "splatter zones" for audience members. Expect foul-mouthed and vulgar language throughout the script and songs, alongside mature themes and suggestive dialogue. There are moments requiring choreographed intimacy, particularly between Ash and Linda. ABOUT EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL Ready to rock, scream, and maybe even get a little possessed? “Join Us” for a “Groovy” and gory experience in the hilarious horror film trope-filled world of Evil Dead: The Musical! We are seeking performers to bring our quirky college students and grotesque demons to life on stage. The roles are very physical and often involve mask, puppet, dance, and staged combat work. Prepare for a blend of campy horror, uproarious comedy, and blood-soaked battles. CHARACTER BREAKDOWN Character genders will typically be played as written, but all roles are open to anyone regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or disability. Note: Songs are not always in the same key as the cast recording. Some lines are spoken over music and it is fine to speak those lines in your audition. Music Director Rachel Townes is looking for style of the show rather than the specific notes being sung. Character Description Vocal Range Song Clip ASH The quintessential reluctant hero, a housewares employee who must rise to the occasion to fight an ancient evil. Ash is initially self-centered and pleasure-seeking, but he develops into a determined fighter, often utilizing his sarcastic and cynical wit alongside excruciating physical comedy. His journey is central, evolving from anti-hero to chainsaw-wielding protagonist through absurd and horrific events. This role demands an actor capable of commanding the stage for approximately 90% of the show. Tenor/Baritone (B2-B4) Ash Music Cuts & Clips CHERYL Ash's dorky, prudish, and skittish younger sister who becomes the first victim of demonic possession. Once possessed, she transforms into a foul-mouthed, mocking ringleader among the demons. This role requires an actor with immense expressiveness to convey her powerful shift from fearful to cruel, showcasing sidesplitting physical details like desperately roving eyes and an affinity for bad puns. Mezzo-Soprano (G3-Ab5) Cheryl Music Cuts & Clips ANNIE A brilliant, strong-willed, and determined archaeologist who arrives seeking her father and the Necronomicon. Annie becomes a pivotal ally against the evil, serving as Ash's intellectual foil. She brings knowledge and intensity to the dire situation, capable of both dramatic and sarcastic tones, and ultimately carries the key to dispelling the demons. She bravely faces a history of loss with unwavering resolve. Mezzo-Soprano (C#4-D5 with one C6) Annie Music Cuts & Clips LINDA Ash's "perfect" girlfriend, initially romantic, kind, and loyal. Her journey takes a horrific turn when she is possessed and ultimately loses her head, serving as a crucial catalyst for Ash's character arc. The role requires embracing a maniacal, over-the-top shift when demonically transformed. Mezzo-Soprano but with a higher range (G3-E5) Linda Music Cuts & Clips SCOTTY Ash's crude, sex-driven, and arrogant best friend, the quintessential frat boy looking for a good time. He serves as a brash comedic foil and a satirical representation of typical horror characters, known for his crude remarks and cynical tone. The actor should lean into an over-the-top characterization, returning later as a surprisingly advisory ghost. Baritone/Tenor (C3-Bb4) Scotty Music Cuts & Clips SHELLY Scott's naive, ditzy, and easily influenced casual partner, Shelly is the stereotypical horror movie victim. Her transformation into an over-the-top, violent demon is a key comedic highlight, demanding an actress who can balance her light-hearted initial demeanor with an exaggerated and maniacal demonic portrayal. Mezzo-Soprano (D4-E5) Shelly Music Cuts & Clips ED Annie's quiet, mild-mannered boyfriend, who famously can never get a word in edgewise before being interrupted. Ed transforms into a self-aware, satirical demon, requiring an actor to be extremely present despite limited initial dialogue, before embracing a silly and memorable demonic persona. Baritone/Tenor (A2-G#4) Ed Music Cuts & Clips JAKE A rough-around-the-edges local who starts as a money-hungry, unhelpful guide and a cynical comedic foil. He embodies the local's distrust of outsiders before becoming a graphic victim of the demons, dragged into the cellar and consumed. This role demands a strong comedic presence and ability to portray a distinct transformation. Baritone (B4-G2) Jake Music Cuts & Clips ENSEMBLE This dynamic and versatile ensemble will embody a myriad of impactful roles including Headless Linda, the mischievous Severed Hand, Demonic Trees, and various animated House Spirits like The Moose. Most will also transform into the full singing and dancing demonic chorus and become the S-Mart Customers in the final scene. This track is for actors eager to play multiple characters, contribute to physical comedy and puppetry, and anchor the show's high-energy musical numbers.
