UGA Theatre will be holding auditions for our fall musical, Guys & Dolls, on Monday, August 24 and Tuesday, August 25 in room 115. With these auditions, we are also casting for our cabaret event, Big Julie's Speakeasy. 

Auditions will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. See below for details regarding the audition process and information about callbacks. Please look through all information on this page. GENERAL AUDITIONS | AUG. 24 & 25

Guys & Dolls is casting a total number of 18-20  people. Understudies and Swings will also be determined. 

Big Julie's Speakeasy is casting a total number of 5-10 people. 

Auditions are open to all students at UGA, whether undergraduate or graduate, regardless of major. 

UPDATE on August 13th: Please make sure to bring 2 physical copies of your headshot & resume. 

For initial auditions:

1. Read the Script.
   • Be sure you are aware of and reasonably comfortable with the material, themes, characters, language, and intimacy portrayed in the performance. Two physical copies of the script are located in Clay Chastian's office. You may check one out to review the script and it must be returned. Thank you!
2. Select the role/production for which you plan to audition.
3. Choose and prepare one of the provided sections of a song from the show.
   • While not all character songs are included, the available selections cover a variety of representative vocal ranges. Choose a piece that best showcases your range for your desired character. Information for selecting music pieces are available below in the Character Breakdown section, accompanied by sheet music. Rachel Townes will be present during auditions to provide accompaniment. Please ensure you are familiar with the song before auditioning and perform it fully in character!
4. Prepare a Monologue.
   • You will be asked to perform a memorized 1-minute comedic monologue of your choice, preferably contemporary and fitting the role you are seeking. It does not  have to be from the show but should fit the tone, language, and style of the character you are interested in playing.
5. Attend auditions on August 24th & August 25th
   • Arrive at least 20 minutes before your slotted time.
   • Make sure to dress in audition attire. 

CALLBACKS | AUG. 28 & 29

1. Callback lists will be posted on (latest) Thursday, Aug. 27th at drama.uga.edu.
2. If called back, prepare callback materials. Link: Callbacks Folder
3. Attend callbacks on August 28th & 29th. August 28th will be music callbacks from 5:30 to 10:00 pm. August 29th will be dance and scene callbacks. Dance callbacks will be held from 12 to 1:30. Scenes will be held from 2 to 5. 
4. The final cast list will be posted the week of August 31st. 

Big julie's speakeasy

Big Julie's Speakeasy is a cabaret-style performance that will be held in the Fine Arts Building prior to most of the performances during the Guys & Dolls run. This cabaret will be directed by Dottie McDaniel with music direction from Jay Ivey & Rachel Townes. The performance will showcase students singing musical numbers from the 20's and 30’s as they interact with audience members and help create an immersive atmosphere of prohibition, high stakes gambling, and romance. Rehearsals for the cabaret will ONLY be one day a week from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. This event will have limited seating and will run for about 5 to 6 performances. Guys & Dolls

Guys & Dolls, directed by Professor George Contini, will be presented on the Fine Arts Stage from November 6 to November 15.  

REHEARSAL COMMITMENT

As this is a musical, this rehearsal period will involve music, dancing, fight sequences, intimacy choreography and scene work. Those auditioning must be available for rehearsals and possess a willingness to fully commit to the entire process. All conflicts must be submitted to the director by callbacks for consideration but are not necessarily guaranteed.

1. Rehearsals will begin Tuesday, September 15.
2. Rehearsals will be Monday through Friday evening from 6:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. and Saturday OR Sunday's from 12 pm to 7 pm. Adjustments for the weekend rehearsal depend on the football schedule. The first half of the rehearsal process will only be 5 days a week of rehearsal. Halfway through, we will move to 6 days a week. 

3. Tech & Fall Break: This production process will have tech during the week of Fall Break and after Fall Break. You will need to be available from October 25th to October 29th. No rehearsals on Friday, October 30th and Saturday October 31st. There will be a technical rehearsal on Sunday, November 1. Please take a look at the most updated rehearsal calendar linked below.

4. Other information: There will be a high school matinee on Tuesday, November 10th, at 10 am. We are currently working on have ASL interpreted performances. 

If you have known conflicts, please list them on your audition form above. You cannot have any conflicts from October 25th to October 29th/November 1st through the run of performances. Those involved in Constellations are unable to audition for the production.  

ABOUT Guys & Dolls

Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler, Nathan Detroit, tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they've been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the strait-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

CONTENT AWARENESS

There is intimacy and stage violence between Sarah and Sky. Adelaide and Hot Box Girls must be comfortable dancing in burlesque undergarments.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Character genders will typically be played as written, but all roles are open to anyone regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, or disability.  

For song selection: If the character you are auditioning for has multiple songs listed, please choose ONE song to sing. Choose 16 to 32 bars to sing and be prepared to share with Rachel, our music director, where you want to start and end your song. Sheet music will be printed at the auditions but feel free to make your own copy. 

*If auditioning for an ensemble role, please select one song and choose 16 to 32 bars to sing. 

Note: Songs are not always in the same key as the cast recording. Some lines are spoken over music and it is fine to speak those lines in your audition. Music Director Rachel Townes is looking for style of the show rather than the specific notes being sung.
